Tension Structure Safety: It’s as Important as Aesthetics

Tensions structures offer many benefits to the properties that opt to install them. From shade to aesthetics, depending on the materials you decide to use, there are many possibilities at play. We work hard to make our clients’ visions a reality. However, all of these benefits mean very little if the structures themselves aren’t safe and stable. That’s why we take just as much time focusing on tension structure safety as we do, making it functional.

Like any construction, tension structures must adhere to a strict set of standards before being deemed safe for public use. We take these guidelines seriously. Fortunately, with proper planning, design, and maintenance, you can build a tension structure as safely as other buildings.

Here are three keys to tension structure safety that we live by:

Strong Foundations

Tension structures are only as strong as their support beams. Much like the load-bearing walls in a building, crew must anchor these beams well. Firm attachment protects the structure’s integrity from wind and other environmental stressors.

When used in other places, like attached to the sides of buildings, crews must take additional care. These precautions are to ensure that the structure does not take away from the strength and integrity of the property. Our team of engineers spends countless hours to make sure all of the math adds up to a tension structure that’s not only beautiful but dependable too. It all starts with building a strong foundation to ensure tension structure safety.

Remember the Fabric

As we’ve mentioned in past blogs, workers must consider durable fabric like they consider other materials in the project. Every fabric has different qualities when it comes to factors like tensile strength, maintenance requirements, UV protection, and flammability.

Finding the right fabric for each client’s unique needs is a major priority for us, and is a regular safety consideration. For example, imagine living in Buffalo, but not having a fabric that’s rated for heavy snow. You can’t just drape any canvas across any environment. Putting safety first means catering the materials to the stressors they will encounter.

Ongoing Maintenance

Just like a building, tension structures require maintenance. Sure, you may have invested in materials (like our TiO2 – coated PTFE membrane), but as a general rule of thumb, it’s important to regularly clean and maintain your tension structures to ensure their longevity. These last anywhere from 15-30 years, depending on the fabrics you use, and the best way to make sure they do is to take care of your build as much as you can.

This means making an effort to clear off leaves, cleaning leftover pollution, and doing spot inspections to ensure everything is still performing at its best. Every building needs a tune-up every once in a while. Keeping an eye on your tension structure’s health is the best way to keep it up to code.
