How TiO2–Coated PTFE Membranes Can Help Fight COVID-19

tension structure safetyWe’re living in cautious times. The current COVID-19 pandemic has many citizens worried about leaving their homes. We’ve seen other airborne viruses like the common cold and the flu come and go, but this one is different. It’s targeting our population when we don’t have any natural immunity to it.

So, what can we do about it? As tension structure experts, you may think that our ability to help in the fight may be pretty limited. We, on the other hand, have a different mindset. You see, we’ve got a secret weapon, and it’s called a TiO2-coated PTFE membrane.

Here’s are two ways it can help your property create a more sanitary environment for now, and the future:

COVID-19 Fighter: Photocatalytic Membrane

TiO2 – coated PTFE membranes are unique because they have this amazing ability to clean the air around them. Previously, we touted them as pollution mitigators – which they certainly are. But in light of our current COVID-19 circumstances, we realized there was a second use: joining the fight against Coronavirus.

You see, when you build a tension structure that’s coated with TiO2, it becomes what’s called a photocatalytic membrane. Remarkably, the coating reacts with the sun’s UV rays to create a surface where hydroxy radicals (.OH) and superoxide radicals (O2-) oxidize (decompose) all organic substances. This reaction actively cleanses the surrounding area, sanitizing potentially harmful microbes and other pollutants. This leads to healthier air for your visitors to breathe.

Remember the Fabric

With TiO2 – coated PTFE membranes, as with any tension structure, there is the additional benefit of airflow when compared to other, more rigid alternatives. Competing shade and decorative structures often involve the use of heavier building materials and do not have as much flexibility with their design. As a result, you can end up with a final product that may do the trick, but leaves a lot of stagnant air in its wake. With what we’ve learned thus far about defeating this COVID-19 virus, that’s a recipe for disaster.

One of the best ways to ensure your business is as clean as possible is having fresh air constantly circulating. By installing a tension structure, you don’t inhibit the inflow of clean air, but rather, work alongside it. Pair that with the photocatalytic qualities we mentioned earlier, and you’ve got yourself a passive air purifier. Your property will benefit from the beautiful pearly-white aesthetic that accompanies this material. It will also promote a significantly cleaner environment as compared to other structural additions.
